Unison Mac

Unison is a sharewareMac OS X client for Usenet, developed by Panic Software. It requires access to a news server and supports binary file downloading (including NZB support), group browsing and segmenting and error checking utilities. The software won the Apple Design Award for Best Mac OS X User experience in 2004, as well as being a runner-up in the 'Best product' category.[1]

On 6 November 2014 Panic Software announced, with the release of version 2.2, that all further work on Unison had been discontinued. Unison is still available for download and no longer requires a purchased license; however, it is unsupported by Panic.[2]

If you use Mac OS X, you have several options forreading Usenet newsgroups. Some newsreaders offer agraphical interface, while others are text-based:

  • Halime: Developed by Imdat Solak, Halime is anative Cocoa newsreader that can handle multiple subscriptions, andsupports both online and offline reading and posting. Halime has agraphical thread view and makes extensive use of the OS XAqua interface.
  • Hogwasher: Developed by Asar, Hogwasheris both a newsreader and an email client, and allows you to sort andview articles in a number of ways, including by file series.   • MacSOUP: MacSOUP is an offline newsreader withrudimentary email capabilities, originally for Mac OS andnow available for Mac OS X 10.1.3 and later. MacSOUP isshareware.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird: An open-source web browserand mail and newsreader, Thunderbird is freeware, andsupports multiple subscriptions, filters, a graphical thread view, andmultiple sorting options. For more, see the Thunderbirdhome page.

  • MT-NewsWatcher: MT-NewsWatcher is derived from NewsWatcher and features easy-to-use filtering, searching, and sorting features. The program also makes viewing and saving binaries from newsgroups easy, and works transparently across multiple news servers. MT-NewsWatcher is freeware.
  • NewsWatcher-X: NewsWatcher, by John Norstad, is the preeminent Mac OS newsreader. Electric Fish, Inc., carbonized it to make it a native Mac OS X application. NewsWatcher-X is freeware.
  • Tin: An OS X version of the well-knownUnix newsreader, Tin is a text-only application for usewithin the Terminal application. For more, see the tin.org web site.
  • Unison: Developed by Panic, Unison offers the standard newsreader functionality, plus a unique four-view interface that lets you view and work with Usenet group content in one of four ways: messages, files, images, or music. For more, see the Unison web site.
